What is it you truly want? The thing you haven’t shared with anyone (yet). That big audacious something that scares the sh** out of you as in your heart of hearts you know in an ideal world – if money wouldn’t be an issue – if someone would give you a magic wand – that’s what you would put your time and effort into.
But what happens?
We tell ourselves it’s not possible, it’s ridiculous, we won’t make money from it and we need money to put food on the table for our families, right? We don’t have enough time, we are already stretched too thin between taking care of kids, running a household, being a good partner, running a business and/or working part-time – trying to make it all work. How in the world should we have the time to go after that big, ridiculous dream that is completely unrealistic and no matter what we do, won’t happen anyway?!
Trust me, you’re not alone!
But all those oh-so-realistic reasons why we can’t go after that “thing” of ours are more often than not simply excuses. Sorry to shatter that believe for you there. But someone had to tell you.
Here are my 4 myths about dreaming big and the excuses why we can’t go after our biggest dreams BUSTED!
Myth 1: My dreams are big enough!
When you think of your supposedly big dreams and goals. What comes up for you? Have you met that little guy at the back of your head yet? He is that annoying little creature that keeps nagging every time you think of your goal: “You’re not good enough, people won’t like it/you, you won’t see it through, you’re not pretty enough, you’re not clever enough” and so on and so on. How does that make you feel? Not so awesome? You want to hide, you want to run and you most definitely don’t want to go after your dream, right?!
That is what big audacious goals and dreams do to us – they freak us the heck out. They scare us and they make that little guy scream his tiny little lungs out in an effort to protect us. But you know what? You don’t need protection! You’ve got this!
If your dreams don’t scare you they’re not big enough. Full stop. Dream bigger!
Myth 2: It won’t work! I can’t save the world!
Have you ever taken the time to sit down and really reflect on the amazing things you’ve achieved in your life? Things that before you decided to do them and then did them, looked so far out of your reach. You didn’t believe you’d be able to accomplish it.
What happened then? You did it! How did that feel? Freaking awesome, right?! It’s the power of your mind. I know this to be true. What you set your mind to you can achieve. If you just let it happen. Stop listening to the little guy at the back of your head – stop listening to everyone else who proclaims concern and just do it anyway! You can make it work!
Myth 3: You won’t make money from it!
Don’t worry I’m not going to tell you that money doesn’t matter – exactly the opposite is the case. The more money you make, the “free-er” you will be, free from the worries of putting food on the table and providing for your family, free from worries about the future and you’ll be able to devote more time to your dreams, help more people, make the world a better place.
Having said that though, I do believe it shouldn’t be your top consideration in deciding whether or not you should go after your dream. This might sound a bit airy fairy but there actually is enough money in the world for everyone and if you truly go after your dreams, your passion and your purpose. If you’re authentic and stay true to yourself, you will attract the right kinda people and they will gladly give you money towards your cause – whatever that might be.
Myth 4: You don’t have time to go after it!
Guess what, Richard Branson finds the time to run several multi-million dollar companies, support and organise many philanthropic endeavours, fight the war on drugs and so much more. Yes, I admit he most definitely has a massive support system, having people run around left right and centre that do all these important things for him but you know what no one can do for him? Have and hold the vision of what he truly wants to do with his life.
Anyway, you know why you feel like you don’t have time to go after it? Why you just keep adding to your already overflowing plate? Because you don’t follow your passion, because you keep losing your focus – because you never dreamt big enough and then went for it. If you would have, your priorities would be so crystal clear that there wouldn’t be a question what to concentrate on, what to spend your time and in return what NOT to spend your time on. So find your dream – the true one – the one and only (for now) then decide to go after it and then do it! Take action now!
